Note :

Your out-of-pocket fees may reduce significantly once Medicare Safety Net thresholds are reached.

  • Health Care Card holders generally reach the threshold after approximately 2 sessions.
  • Most other patients reach the threshold after approximately 8 sessions.
  • After reaching the Extended Medicare Safety Net, ongoing appointments may effectively cost around $66.50 per session.
  • Ordinary Medicare Safety Net (OMSN) reimburses 100% of the MBS fee after the annual threshold is reached.
  • Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) may reimburse up to 80% of future out-of-pocket expenses, subject to Medicare caps.

  • After the EMSN threshold is reached, appointments may reduce to approximately $66.50 per session for the remainder of the calendar year.

16 Sessions $3,379.10 $211.20

Take Home Message

Although the initial consultation fees are relatively high, ongoing treatment becomes significantly more affordable once Medicare Safety Net thresholds are reached.

  • For most patients, fees reduce substantially after approximately 8 sessions in a calendar year.
  • For Health Care Card holders, this reduction may occur after approximately 2 sessions.
  • A longer course of treatment can therefore be surprisingly cost-effective despite the higher upfront costs during the early stages of care.
  • If you receive other Medicare-funded services that involve gap fees, you may reach the Medicare Safety Net threshold sooner.
  • If you register with Services Australia as a family, eligible out-of-pocket medical expenses incurred by family members can be combined toward the same Medicare Safety Net threshold.
  • This may allow you to access higher Medicare rebates sooner and reduce your out-of-pocket costs for the remainder of the calendar year.

Example

If you, your partner, or your dependent children all incur Medicare gap fees during the year, those costs can be counted together once your family is registered with Services Australia.

This can help your household reach the Medicare Safety Net threshold faster and receive increased Medicare benefits sooner.
